plein air paintings

While I`m concentrating mainly on my semi-imagined landscapes or stylised figures, I love to paint some plein air oils or the odd still life.  Essentially, I`m an outdoor person, and if the weather is good, (an occasion worth celebrating in Ireland), I have to get out.  In Santiago, I took the sunny clime (for most of the year) for granted, but here, it literally is "make hay while the sun shines."

A few months ago, when the pink of cherry blossoms was still to be seen around us, I did some watercolour studies and a few oils.  I posted those and this is the other one I`d mentioned, that I thought I`d overworked.  Normally, I do all my plein air studies on site, and try to work quickly to capture what I feel to be the mood and essence of the place and the moment, but, even though I knew I shouldn`t have, I tweaked at this one in the studio, something just kept niggling at me......
While I really prefer not to touch what I`ve done on location, since nine times out of ten I only make matters worse,  on this occasion, I`m actually quite pleased with the end result.

I`ve always been drawn to the patterns left in a field after a tractor has been through it, and especially after they`ve cut the grass and left it to dry in lines, (although the latter isn`t the case in this study).   I don`t know why particularly, I just am.  There is also something about the division of sky and earth, and yet the simultaneous union that exists between the two, that is so powerful but also peaceful for me.  And I love crows; they are an integral part of the landscape here, especially at dusk as they gather to roost in the trees.

Sometimes, these pieces  serve as platforms for my other work, but if they can stand alone, then that`s a bonus.  These both started out with brushes, but were finished off with a palette knife, my preferred method for this style of working.  As far as I can remember, they are both 14 x 10 inches, but I´ll post the size including frame, when I get them back from the framer`s.

  2. Now there's an idea! Prices vary from around £70 to £445 depending on size, work involved, etc, you know! I'm just off to the studio/gallery to make an inventory of all my paintings, titles and prices, that I finally got framed and hung up today! Hopefully, I'll get a proper opening night with new work included in September when people are back to some kind of a routine, etc.
